Michael Stuart: The Cost of Veteran Leadership - Michael_Stuart
When I looked at the players the Senators put on waivers today, Balcors name jumped off the page. I agree 100% with Michael Stuart’s post, this is a risky move. The Sens signed one too many veterans to expose such a promising young player like Balcors. We can only hope he clears waivers and plays in Belleville before his eventual promotion to the Senators.

I might not be understanding the rules correctly, but don't teams have to put people on waivers to put them on their taxi squad? I'm assuming that's why everyone is doing it. I can't see a lot of people being picked up. If they do pick someone up, they'll have to put them on waivers to put them on a taxi squad. It seems like a really convoluted system. |

Brannstrom late scratch for the scrimmage. Maybe PLD it’s happening 😀 Also Chaplik two goals. He gonna be claim I think |

Almost every other team is waiving similar or superior players today. It is highly unlikely anyone will claim any of these fringe players. Alternatively, the waiver wire may offer the Sens an opportunity to claim a more suitable player who has been waived by another team. |

Given the prospect depth of the team, I'm really not sure why there's so much concern about potentially losing the likes of Balcers or Chlapik. These are 3rd-tier prospects with very limited NHL potential, playing on a lottery team. Does anyone really view these as difficult prospects to replace? Or that they would yield any kind of meaningful trade return? I'd seriously doubt that, certainly in comparison to what more established players like Galchenyuk or Paquette could return at the trade deadline.
Honestly, they have six 1st round pick forwards to develop (Tkachuk, White, Stutzle, Brown, Norris, Greig), along with four recent 2nd round pick forwards (Formenton, Pinto, Jarventie, Sokolov), plus Batherson and Abramov, and at least 4 picks coming in the first 3 rounds of each of the next 2 drafts. Depth isn't the issue, it's getting the higher-end players to be ready to play major roles. And if bringing in much-needed veteran support helps make that happen at the expense of spare parts like Chlapik and Balcers, then so be it.

While I think the organization added a few too many veterans to duct tape roster spots, I don't think yesterday's waiver action was a step in the wrong direction.
Every fanbase over values their prospects and farm system. Waivers are a dose of reality for every fanbase. Sure the Mike Hoffman's happen (clear waivers and become a legit NHLer) but they are few and far in between.
It would be nice to see a younger player get a chance over a veteran who will be gone in a year or two, but if they can't beat out the veteran without being spoon fed, are they a legitimate NHLer? Just like each year during this rebuild, the Sens roster will look quite different at game 40 than it did at game 1.
Stay the course. Guys like Balcers were not going to suddenly turn this team into a contender. |

Man, sens need to trade Logan Brown.
What a horrible decision to trade up 1 spot to take this guy, has the tools, but something missing |

If s.j did pick him up. Likely in part just to jab back at the sens for the fleecing they ended up in retrospect. Taking back Balcers. |

Not sure if it's necessarily something to read into or not, but the forward lineups in Monday's scrimmage looked more than a bit unbalanced.
TEAM SMITH
Tkachuk-Norris-Batherson
Stutzle-Stepan-Dadonov
Paquette-Tierney-C. Brown
Galchenyuk-White-Watson
TEAM JONES
Formenton-Anisimov-Balcers
Paul-L. Brown-Sokolov
Chlapik-Peca-Kelly
Haley-Beaudin-Shaw
Now factor in that the 6 players in bold from TEAM JONES were put on waivers, despite winning the scrimmage. According to Smith, Wolanin, Chlapik, Thomson, and Hogberg played very well - but is certainly strange to see such a disproportionate opportunity for Norris vs. Brown. |

They probably just like him as a player since they drafted him and have a need for good young players. It's fairly common, lots of teams will take a player back because of familiarity etc.
That being said, the Sharks did get fleeced... |
